A Few Photos July 13, 2009

Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 9 commentsWell, we dropped our son off in Calgary for him to start his new job and live in his new home. We are definitely going to miss him, but he will be staying with family, so I know he’ll be okay.
It’s a lot of work moving to a new province, especially if you drive. Before you get insurance and Alberta license plates you have to get your vehicle inspected. First you have to line up at a registry to get the paper for the inspection. You get your insurance from a different place. Once your auto passes the inspection, you line up at the Registry again to show them your form and insurance, and then you finally get a new license plate. It’s much easier here when you get your insurance and plates from the same place.
It was definitely a long drive to Calgary. We stopped to visit family in Kamloops on the way there and then drove the rest of the way the next day. The scenery is beautiful, but ten hours on the road is exhausting. I kept expecting to see some wildlife while driving through Banff, but I didn’t see any. In fact, during our whole trip I only saw some gophers until we were almost home. Just before Chilliwack we saw a deer on the side of the road. I’m definitely glad it decided to run away from the highway, instead of stepping in front of our car.
While away we went to the Calgary Stampede. My sister-in-law’s husband works for the stampede and was able to get us passes for the Lazy S. It’s an enclosed section in the grandstand where you can watch the chuckwagon races and the evening show. It was great. We got to sit near the finish line and could see everything. There was a restaurant there as well. The food was good, but quite expensive. If we had to pay to get into the Lazy S, it would have cost us $345 each. We were certainly lucky to get in for free. The show was fabulous. It went on for about two hours and was very entertaining. There were singers, acrobats, dancers, a comedian, and fireworks. They put on a great show.
We went to the Royal Tyrell Museum while away as well. I went before several years ago, but wanted to visit again to see all of the dinosaurs. I was able to take a ton of photos. I’ll have to show you in September. It was hard to get the right setting on the camera, but in one area we went they had trilobites and other animals under a glass floor. You could barely see them with your eyes, but the setting I used on the camera made them appear much brighter. It’s a great museum. If you are ever in Drumheller you will have to make sure to visit it.
I’ve been enjoying reading everyone’s blogs. It’s great to hear about your summer trips and activities. Some of you have written very amusing/exciting stories. Take a look at what others have written. Keep writing and reading. Most importantly, enjoy your summer! See you all in September.
Zone Track Meet May 18, 2009
Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 3 commentsBe ready for the excitement at the Zone Track Meet. Don’t forget to dress in layers so that you are prepared for hot or cool temperatures. Listen carefully as they call out the events. Don’t worry if they are off time from the schedule – they are usually behind. If it rains a lot, the meet will be postponed. Thursday is the rain out day. There is supposed to be sun that day. Let’s hope for sun, but if not we’ll have a regular day.
Spring is finally here … April 16, 2009
Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 11 commentsI think I can safely say that spring is finally here. I hope I can put away my winter clothes until next year. The temperature is warmer, at least during the daytime. The first signs of spring were the robins, but I noticed bright pink blossoms on some trees on the weekend. I’ve also heard the birds singing like crazy every morning.
What signs of spring have you noticed?

Erica Escapes Again March 12, 2009
Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 39 commentsI think we should have called Erica the hamster, Houdini instead. She managed to get out of her cage again. We couldn’t find any sign of her this time, but she was found eventually. I bet you can never guess where we found her. You may remember that last time she climbed onto the shelf behind my desk and hid behind the boxes. Well, that was the first place I looked for her this morning. She didn’t seem to be there. I looked again after school. When I pulled out everything to look behind them, I thought she wasn’t anywhere near. Lo and behold, she was actually much closer than I thought. As I pulled out a small basket of materials, she moved and caused me to jump in surprise. She was in the basket. Let’s hope she doesn’t perform any more of her disappearing acts again.
Podcasts February 25, 2009
Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 3 commentsI am excited about the podcasts that both classes are producing. Everyone is working hard to finish their recordings so that we can all listen to them. I’ll put them on my class web page when they are done, so that everyone can listen to them at home.
Division four is currently working on a multiplication review that everyone can enjoy. When they are done you can listen to the timestable facts and quiz yourself on what you know. Perhaps you can even download the recording to your own iPod or MP3 player and practice while you are driving in the car. The broadcast will work from your computer too. You can write down your answers while you listen. Hopefully, these podcasts can help you be a faster multiplier.
Division 11 is creating radio shows about Canadian provinces. They are almost done. You will have check out their podcasts soon and see if you can learn something new about Canada.
Winterfest at Oval February 14, 2009
Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 4 commentsI went to the Oval to see the Richmond mass choir and bands perform. It was a fabulous experience. We have so much talent in our schools. The last piece that was presented was even composed by one the district teacher’s. The conductor of the choir used to be my band/choir teacher when I was in high school. He did a great job. I really noticed how much fun the singers seemed to be having. All of the close up shots of the students showed them with huge smiles as they sang. They were very good at watching the conductor and made sure to sing beautifully. The band was terrific too. Three of the band members used to play soccer with my son. It was nice to be able to hear them perform. All of the camera shots of the musicians showed how hard they were concentrating on their music. The district has very talented dancers as well. They had so much energy. I’ve seen the drummers from Boyd perform once before and I really enjoyed them. Their performance at the Oval was fabulous too. It’s great that their music teacher plays right along with them. I wasn’t surprised to hear that our music teacher was the key to making all of this happen. It was her vision that got everyone involved in performing for the Oval. What a wonderful way to acknowledge the Olympics and Canada’s athletes. She should be really proud of herself. I know that I am. We are very lucky to have her at our school every day.
There was a huge crowd at the Oval. How many of you were there? Did you get to see the schools perform?
Groundhog Day February 1, 2009
Posted by msteves in : Uncategorized , 10 commentsWiarton Willie will decide how long winter will be on February 2nd. It has seemed like such a long winter so far. I hope winter won’t be much longer, but I have a feeling it will be longer than normal. Check out this Canadian site about Groundhog Day. There is certainly a big festival planned in Ontario. There are lots of puzzles and trivia available for kids. See if you can find out about the Vancouver Island marmot.
